After graduating university in the UK and with the urge to travel, I decided to book a one-way ticket to Australia on a working holiday visa. After spending my life savings in a few short weeks, I needed a job. New to the country, little life experience and skills, I thought to myself, who are companies always looking for? Salespeople. No barriers to entry and as an extrovert, it took me all of one interview to land myself a job.
I spent the next year cold calling, selling funeral insurance. 200 dials, every day, without fail. Very little warm or inbound leads.
After spending a year in Australia, I decided that Australia was to be my home. Upon sponsorship, I was hit with "to stay here we need $50,000 a month in sales". The choice was simple, sell, get a new sponsor and spend a fortune on a visa or go back to the UK. I had to get good at cold calling.
And this is where I really started to seek support. This education was worth more than my degree ever was. After years of cold calling, building and training sales teams, I decided to help those that get little support, training or help. Sales is sink or swim for many.
I'm now a citizen of Australia, and my goal of calling this country my home has been achieved. While others may seem sales as "just a job", remember it's a vehicle that will decide the life you live.
