I recently saw a post on LinkedIn that completely blew my mind. It said:
I am sure many of you saw this post too.
And honestly, it is really excellent advice.
...If you want to lose your job.
The Danger of Being an Order Taker
Working in direct sales means you should know how to create your own demand. Period.
Sure, in some companies you can hide behind a massive marketing budget, endless inbound leads, and a product that sells itself. You can spend your days answering emails and conducting friendly product walkthroughs.
But you never know when that is going to end.
As we have seen over and over again, it does not take much to get made redundant when market conditions change. When the inbound tap turns off, the "salespeople" who only know how to take orders are the first ones out the door.
Hiring Managers Want Builders
If you are building a sales team, you do not want order takers.
You want proactivity. You want someone who can build pipeline from absolutely nothing. You want someone who can think on their feet, handle rejection, and uncover real business problems.
And the absolute best way to prove you can create from nothing is to pick up the phone and cold call.
Take Control of Your Career
When you master the phone, you are no longer at the mercy of the marketing department or algorithm changes. You are in complete control of your own paycheck. If you need more pipeline, you know exactly what to do.
If you are in sales today, do not listen to the noise telling you that the phone is dead. It is more alive than ever.
Triple down on your cold calling skills. Invest in proper SDR Sales Training. Learn how to actually command a conversation.
In three years time, you will only be thanking yourself.
